The 28th Annual Bob Skaggs Memorial Food Drive in Sherman

The 28th Annual Bob Skaggs Memorial Food Drive in Sherman
In Sherman, Texas, a remarkable tradition takes center stage each year. The 28th annual Bob Skaggs memorial food drive has begun outside the Sherman Walmart. Bob Skaggs, who passed away in 2005, was renowned for his boundless generosity. His wife, Debbie Skaggs, shared, "He always gave to the community and we've always been there to assist. After his passing, they asked if we could name this food drive after him, and of course, we agreed."

Helping Those in Need Across Grayson County

This food drive plays a crucial role in collecting sustenance to feed those facing food shortages across Grayson County. As Debbie said, "The people here are incredibly giving. Texoma always comes through, no matter the circumstances."The drive isn't limited to the Thanksgiving week; it provides a continuous source of food throughout the year. Captain Michael Cain of the Salvation Army explained, "They've been conducting this drive for years, and each year it expands a bit more. Last year, we had 32 pallets of food, but now we've run out. The need is constantly growing."Each passing year witnesses the drive's continued growth. Debbie proudly stated, "When we first started, we couldn't even fill a truckload, but now we're filling semi-trucks."The increasing need for food across the area is a significant concern. Cain added, "Every year, we see more and more people who struggle to put food on the table. It could be your neighbor right next door who comes here to get the food we raise."

Easy Ways to Contribute

For those with a generous spirit, it's incredibly simple to offer assistance. Cash donations are welcome, and non-perishable food items are also greatly needed. Cain said, "You can simply stop by and drop off your donation. You don't even have to get out of your car. If you have something in your pantry that you won't be using, bring it by. We'll ensure it reaches a family in need within the community."

The Lasting Legacy

This food drive serves as a lasting testament to the generosity not only of Bob Skaggs but the entire Skaggs family. Debbie emphasized, "I won't always be here, but the food drive will. It's a reminder of Bob and our family's values. It's truly a remarkable thing."The drive will continue on Tuesday and Wednesday. The Skaggs family and the Salvation Army will be stationed outside the Sherman Walmart from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Tuesday and from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Wednesday.Copyright 2024 KXII.
